The Berkshires are known worldwide for arts and cultural resources, an astonishing variety that includes the 19th and early 20th century Impressionist masterpieces in the permanent collection of the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown and acclaimed 21st century works at MASS MoCA in nearby North Adams. Some of America’s greatest works of art were created in the Berkshires as well – Herman Melville wrote Moby Dick at his Pittsfield home Arrowhead, and Daniel Chester French sculpted the beloved Seated Lincoln for the Lincolm Memorial at his Stockbridge studio, Chesterwood.
